Indulgence Hair

After an indecisive inspection of the hair salon, I finally came up with a plan. I picked this spot because of the nice block glass window, and wanted to make the window light coming in, blue, to add a bit of drama. To do this I used 2x 1000w tungsten hot lights instead of regular strobes.

The key light was inside a silver 24”x 32” softbox (chosen to add punch) just out of the frame to camera right (at about 3/4 power). There is a small reflector slightly above head height on the left hand side, to fill in the shadow side of Teena’s face, without throwing light everywhere. Placement was easy due to working with light I could see. Accurately positioning small fill panels is much more difficult when using flash heads, IMHO.

The second light is in the back room, to add warmth to the floor boards and visible wall. Without this, the room would have looked cold, due to the window light spilling in from it’s two windows.

We moved the hair products stand into position to add a bit more background interest- I figured the colourful tubes would look good out-of-focus.

Shoot with a wide aperture (to throw the background out of focus). Done.
